What is a spark plug?
Most people have heard of spark plugs - but it's useful to know exactly how they work so you understand what effect they can have if they're not working as they should.
A spark plug is an electrical conductor - it transforms the electrical current that comes from the ignition system and creates a spark that's used to ignite the fuel in the car engine.
There is usually one spark plug for every cylinder in most engines - so if you have a 4-cylinder engine, there will be 4 spark plugs. Likewise, if you have a vehicle with a V8 engine, there will be 8 spark plugs.
Occasionally, vehicle manufacturers will use two spark plugs per cylinder - but this is usually reserved for performance or luxury vehicles.
The combustion process that happens inside your engine is very precisely timed. The spark has to come at the same time as fuel and air is sent into the combustion chamber. When this mixture ignites, it pushes the piston down - creating the mechanical movement in the engine which eventually turns the wheels.
If a single spark plug isn't working as it should, the engine will not produce as much power as usual and the 'check engine' warning light may show on your dash.
What are some signs that you need new spark plugs?
The most common symptoms of failed or failing spark plugs are:
Engine warning light
Your engine warning light will often come on if the car's ECU (onboard computer) detects any kind of problem with the running of the engine. If you have an issue with the spark plugs, this could cause the warning light to show.
Engine misfires
Your car has more than one cylinder in which the fuel/air combustion needed to move takes place. If one of these cylinders isn't working as is should, it's described as a 'misfire'. With one or more cylinders misfiring, acceleration or engine power will feel like it's 'stuttering' - coming and going as the misfiring cylinder fails to produce the right amount of power.
Poor fuel economy
If the engine is not igniting fuel as it should, the ECU may increase the amount of fuel that's being sent to the engine to help with combustion. If a spark plug isn't using this fuel, it's wasted - and fuel economy will go down.
Poor performance
Even if the car isn't consistently misfiring and causing noticeable vibration or jerking under power, malfunctioning spark plugs may cause a drop in performance.
What does a spark plug replacement involve?
To replace spark plugs in your vehicle, a mechanic will usually follow these steps:
- Diagnostic equipment will be used on the vehicle to identify ECU error codes. This helps to work out where the problem is coming from.
- The ignition system is cleaned, ready for disassembly
- If required, the intake manifold will be removed
- The ignition leads or coil packs will be disconnected and removed - allowing access to the spark plugs
- The old spark plugs are removed and inspected - then the threads they sit in within the cylinder head will be inspected for any signs of damage
- New spark plugs are then fitted
- The spark plug wires and ignition leads are reconnected
- If the inlet manifold has been removed, it will be refitted with new gaskets
- The engine will be started to check that everything is functioning properly
- Diagnostic equipment will be used to check that error codes are no longer showing and previous errors will be cleared from the system
